In the past decade the importance of money in football, like with most sports, has grown exponentially. Fourteen years ago, the most expensive player in the world, Alan Shearer, moved from Blackburn Rovers to Newcastle United for £15 million; in the relatively short period since then, football has undergone a vast shift, and in the modern game, talented players routinely swap clubs for £12-15 million. We’re now in the era of the super rich football clubs; however, with vast amounts of money being exchanged to desperately keep up with these elite rich clubs, can football continue down this troubled road?

Football Feeling the Pinch

The recent high profile case of Portsmouth FC going into administration for mounting debts of allegedly up to £80 million, has bought the issue of the astronomical amounts of money being spent in modern football back to the forefront. Portsmouth became the first Premiership club in history to slip into administration, and are symptomatic of a growing trend in football; teams spending vastly beyond their means, just in order to stay afloat in the Premier League, such is the monetary value of this achievement. However, it’s becoming increasingly difficult and costly to achieve this, let alone compete for one of the illustrious European places available.
