The perception of how valuable New York Times information is may determine whether readers consider it a service they are willing to pay for. Just as the newspaper bandied about the prospect before deciding to impose a pay wall for online access, readers will soon face the choice of assenting to the new payment requirement system.
In a move announced more than a year in advance, the Times intends to implement a metered pay system in January 2011 that enables readers to see a set number of articles for free before they are asked to make payment. The paper's executives still have not decided, or at least officially made known, the charge for monthly access or the number of monthly articles that may be seen for free.
Questions Over Whether Pay Wall May Happen
Some observers are speculating the pay wall will not actually become a reality in 2011. If it does, it may not last until the end of the year, their thinking goes. The most devoted readers are likely to pay but their numbers could be increasingly limited.
